Personal Card * |
* Full name:
Zelgadiss Graywords (the Christian
name comes from the Latin word "Zelōsus" that
means "celoso, entusiasta" in Spanish and "Zealous"
in English) |
*Nicknames:
He has several.
Ma-Senshi ("Senshi": warrior, "Ma": Dark,
demonic, in Japanese;
"Rezós Berserker" (that could be translated by "The Rezo's Fury").
"Ma Kenshin"魔剣士殿:
idem, demonic swordsman. |
*
Age:
14-15 years at the moment of its transformation. 18
in the first series; 20-21 in Try. According with novels, he's
around 20. |
*
Species:
Chimera. In the past, human. |
* Weight:
Later interviews revealed his weigh is around 90kg. |
* Height:
1'77 m. |
* Profession:
Astral Sorcerer (Shamanism) with rudimentary
knowledge of White magic and something of Black Magic. He also
is a capable skilled swordsman (in fact before his transformation
he wished to be a great swordsman). His work used to be the "Rezo's
Puppet", but on this moment, he can consider as a mercenary. |
* Place of origin:
Unknown.
His parents traveled a lot trying to hide their son from Rezo, thus the place of birth is unknown. |
*
Family:
His only well-known relative is Rezo. In novels,
he speculates whereupon he is his grandfathers, great-grandfather
or both (the similarity between them is obvious). Later, in an
interview, H.Kanzaka confirmed that Rezo was his great-grandfather,
only. About Zel's parents, there is nothing confirmed really by
Kanzaka; there are two theories: the first one is that both committed
crimes and lost their son. The second and far more probable is
that they both died by Rezo's hands, who made it seemed to be
an accident. Apparently Zelgadiss is son of the Rezo's granddaughter. |
*
Likes/Hobbies:
Officially, he hasn't any, but a careful
look reveals that he likes the fencing, sciences, playing the
guitar and the good wine (and according with English fans, he
has a thing for coffee, but I think it's tea.) |
* In love of:
He does not dare to recognize it , but of
Amelia. Peculiarly this is thus in the series and official publications,
but Kanzaka did not have that intention. |
* Hatred:
Himself, Rezo,
Xelloss, them starting of Lina, to be part of ridiculous situation,
Mazoku, etc... |

Analysis |
* Peculiarities/Powers*
He was born as human, but currently,
he is a chimera composed by his human himself, a stone golem
and a demon-brownie (It isn't a "real" demon, as mazoku is,
but a kind of goblin; that may create confusion) In the Slayers
world, brownies are a kind of goblin skilled in magic, their
skin is blue and they have long ears. That causes Zel' stone
skin is studded of rock splinters, his hair is like silver needles,
has long ears and sharp teeth. Due of his looks and his bad
fame, he covers himself with simple clothes in white color (in
the novels, that in addition, are the color of mourning in Japan)
and beige in the series.
Summarizing, Zelgadiss conjugates the intelligence and the heart
of a human, with the magical skills of a demon-brownei and the
force and resistance of golem; he is very capable in the Astral
Magic, and also like skilled swordsman. It has in addition the
great intelligence. The Perfect soldier. On the contrary his
skin lasts and the fact of being completely human does not incapacitate
other many things to him like being able to swim or to have
children, and single it can be damaged by offensive spells of
high level and the Sword of Light. |
* Differences between Novels and Series*
Zelgadiss is one of the characters who has more changes
according to every version. |
> Series:
he dresses in beige, its hair is light purple mentalist
and he doesn't cover his face so often. On the other hand,
his character is more kind, (sometimes he is the clown of
the series) and prudish. He also knows spells black magic
and others of astral magic that in novels does not know.
Its first encounter with Amelia was not very good, but he
meets her father; Lina uses him as target of her pranks
and her experiments, which makes him really angry. |
 |
> Novels:
he dress in white, its hair always is silver plated, and
he uses to be covered because his looks and his fame. His
character is quite darker and crueler than in the series,
and he is not so prudish, either. On the contrary to the
series, He only spells of Astral Magic, nothing of Black,
and other that appear in the series that knows to do in
novels. Its relation with Amelia begins in a kinder way
and she taught him White Magic, he does not meet his father,
and at least he returns to Lina the pranks and hits than
she does to him. |

* Rumors*
There is a rumor that runs around
and says than he and Amelia are siblings because in fact Zelgadiss
is the result of certain affair of Amelia's mother. The reasons
on which this rumor is based is... the similarity of their hairs
(ˇ) All this is false: the only relative ("alive")
of Zelgadiss is Rezo, and is very probable that that rumor is
product of those who are against the existence of that couple.
Other rumor, or belief generalized at least between Japanese
fans, is that he is son of the granddaughter of Rezo, as the
western fans think Rezo is both, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Finally, the most common belief among western fans is Zel's
true reasons to become human again is because he thinks he's
a ugly freak; that's not true, but there is a very different
reason than we see in the following sections.
|
|
|
Very little
is known about the Zel's life before Rezo transformed him:
it seems to be that their parents were assassinated by Rezo,
who made it seem to be an accident, and in that way, Rezo
took care of a baby Zel, and he was in charge to raise him
and to educate him, presumably having a happy and educated
childhood. |
 |
In
any case neither of them knew that the Red Priest was under
the Dark Lord's oppression, and Zel even less knew that
Rezo killed his parents and what it glided for him. During
his first adolescence - by reasons officially unknown-,
it seems that Zelgadiss was obsessed with being the best
one in the art of the fencing since magic did not interest
to him), so it was entirely dedicated to practice it. Meanwhile,
Rezo was dedicated to look for the Philosopher Stone to
revive Ruby Eyed, who in return would give back his the
Sight to him, but the Red Priest did not know that he was
blind indeed because of Shabranigudu, and either that it
was taking control over him. All those facts induced him
to turn his only relative (well-known) into a chimera being,
and once this was done, Rezo forced him to do the work dirty
that needed to obtain the Philosopher Stone. Eventually,
Zel found out that those were the real plans that Rezo had
for him since the beginning. |
All this deeds
caused that Zelgadiss become into the "Ma-Senshi",
and being persecuted by the crimes that he committed under
the Rezo's orders. Zelgadiss got to deeply hate towards
his only relative because what he was turned to be, and
he hoped to get the Philosopher Stone for himself; therefore,
he would be able to take revenge of Rezo, who was far more
powerful than him. Eventually, he found that chance when
he met Lina, but in the end they both found out what was
the real cause of Rezo's deeds. |
 |
As
curiosity, I'll tell that in the series this fact is almost
anecdotal, but in the manga, Zelgadiss asked Lina that kills
by rough estimate of Ruby thus to save Rezo' soul that was
been corrupting. In my opinion, Zel made up his mind to
ask pardon to Rezo in certain way when he learned that they
both had been used like puppets of the Demons' Lord. |

| Zelgadiss is one
of the personages more popular among by the fans worldwide, specially
by English fangirls who thinks on him almost as some kind of sexual
object... and certainly he is a charismatic personage, in fact
is one of the most complex personages of the series. Whatever
is it, his character trails aren't the most peasants of the world:
he is egoistic, cynical, solitary, cruel, insensible, obsessive,
etc... but also he is tremendously passion in his feelings, intelligent
and it is seen that in him bottom has good heart and is noble.
The reasons of the personality of Zelgadiss area caused by the
traumas that he has suffered in his life; in certain way is an
emotional survivor: it would be possible to be said that as human,
he had all the good things that it can have like safe chimera
with a good dose of obsession and naďveté. Later, his only relative,
Rezo, deceive to him and he makes him lose his humanity turning
to him a monster in all the senses: it physically stops being
human and emotionally, Rezo betrays him and forces him to commit
all class of crimes to obtain the Philosopher Stone. In that way,
just a 15 years teen as Zelgadiss was, becomes into a killer monster
instead of a youngster with anxieties of greatness in the fencing...
what that supposes.
All those deeds made what was the good heart of Zelgadiss would
be turned into somebody cruel as if in some way he was resigned
to be a monster, and therefore, to act like one, assimilating
the bad thing of the life like part of him and turned him into
a cold hearted man, as an emotional barrier against his slavery
towards Rezo, which justifies his rough behavior and cynicism.
Despite of himself, Zelgadiss is aware in all moment about what
he has lost and he fights to get it back. His obsession to find
a cures to his chimerical condition and returning to be human
is that: this obsession isn't related with having a big ugly-freak
complex as many people thinks; it's over all those things, it's
a cures of his conscience. Returning to be human means to stop
being a monster in all senses, reason why it has made because
of Prayer and at the same time be able to feel and to live like
a normal person.
In a certain sense ,it would be possible to be said that Zelgadiss
and Amelia are similar: both try to follow ahead in spite of the
emotional treasons that have suffered using in it a series of
tremendously obsessive emotional exits, either by "Fighting
by the Justice that is what my father does, my only relative whom
it does not love to me to kill" in the case of Amelia,
or by "I cannot have feelings like a normal person, so
single it matters to me that it can return to be it"
in the case of Zelgadiss. But for misfortune of Zelgadiss, he
does not seem to have luck in anything and until the moment he
has not been able to find a remedy for his chimerical condition,
and also he is object of the demons because of its feelings of
hatred... and of goofy things that Lina does to him continuously. |
