In the series it does not appear, but when he gets drunk, all his mental confusion disappears and he turns very sharp minded (!) The disadvantage of that is when recovers his old self, he forgets all the previous events... And he is convinced of all the opposite.

* Differences between Novels and Series*
Gourry from novels and series are different somehow, but not much, really.
> Anime: the Gourry from the anime version is a younger  than the one from novels. On the other hand, due to the first film, it is deduced that he is descending of a human hybrid and elf. The sword that he handles is Two-hand type, and not a bastard sword like Zel's. In a the series loses the Sword of Light when "giving back it" to Sirius.
> Novels: obvious in opposition to the indicated thing previously. This Gaury is more indefinite and is completely human, and it is not as innocent either as it pretends to be the one of the series; he himself trains to Lina in the handling of the sword. The sword that handles is of "average hand" or bastard whereas in the series is espadón. Finally it loses the Sword of light at LON hands here that do not give back it.

In the series it does not get to appear, but when he gets drunk, all his mental confusion disappears and he turns into a very sharp minded guy. But all this face away when he recovers himself ; he forgets all the happened one and that he is convinced of all the opposite.
Other interesting fact is, before he'd meet Lina, he stopped by Sailarg city; there, he met Shilfild and did something very important. That's why for Sairag city he's some short of "hero". In spite of his lack of memory, Gourry knows very well what happened there, and he does not want to talk about it... so we don't know what was it.
* History*

The history of Gaury is more dramatic than the one from the Inverse. Their family be from always one of most capable in the handling of the sword, and in old times the elves trusted the safekeeping to them of the Sword of Light trusting that they would know the magnitude of that responsibility, possibly as a result of the events with Xannafer. In that way, during generations the Gabliev family kept the Sword of Light, passing it from parents to children like their more appraised familiar treasure, and 150 years ago one of them, with the help of that Sword of Light, managed to defeat to the Xannafer chimera, also called Super best call, in the city of Sairag.

During his childhood, Gourry's father told him this story, but considering his personality, he did not pay much attention. Later, already of youngster, Gaury embarked like mercenary soldier in a war of which there isn't many information. There, he met other mercenary soldiers, Leon and Glantz, and he got along well with. Once the war was finished the war, Gourry returned to his home.
There was and so the Gabliev family began to have serious disputes over the Sword, and Gourry, in his fury, escaped from his homeland taking with himself the sword. During that time, he traveled by diverse places stopping in Sairag, where thanks to the Sword of Light, he obtained certain feat with which saved the city, but he does not want to speak absolutely anything about it. There, he also met Shilfild, who ended up having strong feelings for him.
Later, with the intention to end the disputes of his family, it was arranged to throw it to the sea and thus to put to him full stop. But Gaury did not get to do it, because it had an accidental encounter with another mercenary (that turns out to be the father of Lina), who without really proposing it to it, made realize him the important thing that it was that sword and that to throw it to the sea was not the solution; so that Gaury left its original idea and preferred to dedicate itself to travel by the world in search of adventures. Days later, he met certain redheaded sorceress, who he ended up traveling with. The rest is known.
*Personality*

Gaury is totally the opposite to what would fit the mercenary role that works for money; there are two things that differentiate him deeply. In the first place, it is necessary to say that he is very clumsy mentally, until the end to almost describe him as "idiot", but it is not like that. Gourry is incredibly confused and has an absolute lack of memory, so that it is impossible to him to relate of facts that are obvious for others, and often is incapable of realizing of tremendous platitudes. Nevertheless, when he is able to relate facts, one sees that if puts an incisive intelligence; in addition it also has an acute intuition that him aid to compensate its lack of concentration and that will surprise more than one. On the other hand, it is necessary to indicate the sweetheart that it has, in fact Gaury is more near being a knight that a mercenary that works by money. He - by advice of her grandmother ^^ - is always arranged to help others, coverall to the destitute and their acts never are interested. In that way, Gourry always helps somebody, and he also needs of somebody to protect or that directs its life because he is incapable to act by egoism, and at the same time to judge badly the others.

Finally it is necessary to say that, since Gaury does not have great ambitions, his primary target in life - putting aside from guarding the sword- he is not other that the one to enjoy his life, reason for which accompanies to Lina in her trips: both share the same diversions, eating, fighting and having joy.
